Well, here we are – 2025. Last week, we ran a poll on social media asking if there was a home project owners wanted to tackle in 2025. 78% answered yes – this is the year. Whether the project was simply hanging great grandpa’s painting on the wall versus adding a luxurious, spa-like bathroom in the primary suite, what we do know is that homeowners are no longer simply seeking functional upgrades. They’re looking to create spaces that truly reflect their lifestyle, values and aesthetic preferences. Here are six remodeling trends we believe will define 2025. If you’re planning a remodel, these insights will inspire you to re-imagine your home and turn it into a space that suits your vision.
Open Yet Defined Spaces
It’s no secret that the team at ValEquity loves a good remodel. Often the client is willing to sacrifice space from an adjacent room to create a more open plan and change their home’s function. The Covid pandemic, which spawned the work from home trend did cause many to reconsider the open floor concept. The solution to this became defining open spaces for specific tasks. Creative use of half-walls, built-ins and planning for furniture during the design process can achieve both of these project goals. Think about a built-in desk area that is hidden amongst a wall of cabinets in the kitchen, and utilizes the same countertop material as the rest of the space. Or perhaps built-in niches to define a reading area off to the end of a living room. You get the idea.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials
For the last couple of decades homeowners have made a cognizant decision to begin incorporating environmentally sound elements into their home life. With companies having adopted this mindset, price points for products have become more affordable. Cork and bamboo have been incorporated for sometime now, and now companies are finding additional ways to use these. Last year the industry started to see the shift away from quartz which contains silica, towards porcelain, a clay-based product. Many homes feature walls and corners of houseplants as well. Keep reading, we will touch more on this topic.
Bold Bathrooms and Spa-Like Materials
Continuing the trend from the last couple of years, bathrooms are turning into health retreats. Spas and cold plunge tubs have increasingly found their way into homes. It makes sense, the day begins and ends utilizing the bathroom. People are continuing to prioritize their health and wellness, so this goes hand in hand. We expect to see more wet rooms and shower rooms with upgraded amenities such as steam and sauna functions. Aromatherapy and chromotherapy are also in play now for homeowners who are remodeling their bathrooms. Expect these spaces to utilize natural looking materials such as wood look and natural stone finishes.
Kitchens That Prioritize Functionality and Design
As product manufacturers continue to market towards homeowners, higher end, professional kitchen appliances are becoming more commonplace in the home remodel. Planning around these appliances requires a professional designer to assist with proper space allocation, as well as planning for the additional mechanical demands. Panel-ready appliances will continue to warm up spaces, ditching the cold, stainless steel look. Expect to see earthy materials like terra-cotta and warm woods in cabinetry. Additionally, extended kitchen spaces such as large pantries, back kitchens, and sculleries are going to continue to be popular. The trend of bringing the outdoors in will not stop at the kitchen.
Outdoor Living Spaces Get an Upgrade
Multiple cooking areas will not be confined to the kitchen in 2025. Homeowners are seeking outdoor entertainment and turning their properties into multi-use. Gone are the days of a single grill. Expect to see outdoor kitchens and bars incorporated into more and more homes in 2025. Multiple outdoor cooking options–grill, griddle top and smoker–will appear, going with the outdoor sink and fridge. Landscape wise, native plantings and gardens are going to be seen more frequently than before.
Technology-Infused Homes
This is certainly not a new thing anymore. Many of us own multiple assistant devices that have a female voice that can tell us the weather and add things to an online shopping cart. Technology has advanced where many homes are fully automated thanks to “smart devices”. Creating lighting scenes and washes to set various moods for entertaining is now quite easy. Back to the kitchen, newer appliances are “smart” now. Look for porcelain countertops (hey, we already learned about this!) but with a thin slab, to be used with induction compatible cookware, to create seamless countertops in the kitchen. In a complete 180 shift, some will elect to move away from additional smart technology in their home. Where do you stand? Do you want state-of-the-art technology or do you prefer to unplug?
